A powerful explosion ripped through a chemical plant in eastern China, killing at least 47 people and injuring dozens of others.

The State Council of China officially recognized the severity of the accident, often referred to as "3.21 Explosive Accident". Amid the destruction and the rising death toll in Tianjin, the cause of the enormous explosions that erupted late Wednesday remained unclear.
