Montréal, June 4th, 2013– VIA Rail Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) have been in negotiations since the fall of 2012. The train was formerly operated with one or two Budd Rail Diesel Cars. VIA Rail lacked the funds to buy new cars, so they completely rebuilt and upgraded the original stainless steel coaches built by Budd in 1955 for the Canadian Pacific's Canadian, making this train a real classic in its own right, albeit now running on the 'wrong' company's route.
VIA Rail remains optimistic that an agreement will be reached between the parties. Service suspension. The rail service says two trains from Ottawa to Quebec City will depart on Sunday while full service for trains running between the Quebec City-Montreal-Ottawa corridor will resume on Monday. Via Rail says most of its routes will be up and running again by early next week, including some key Eastern Canada services that were stalled by ongoing rail blockades.
