The system was named Gloria by the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET on 18 January, becoming the tenth named storm of the 2019–20 European windstorm season. Storm Gloria hit Spain last weekend and since then it has brought torrential rain, hurricane-force gales, tidal swells and snowstorms. The Free University of Berlin named the system Ilka. Gloria reached Category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale near the Bahamas, but weakened significantly by the time it made landfall on the Outer Banks (Figure 2). Storm Gloria is expected to bring heavy rains to Catalonia today, increasing the risk rivers in areas like Girona could overflow.
