Abstract The purpose of this online hypertext book is to explore the psychological dimensions of environments created by computers and online networks. The Psychology of Cyberspace is a course taught by John Suler in the Department of Psychology at the Science and Technology Center at Rider University. The term "cyberspace" has been mentioned so often that it may at this point seem trite and overly commercialized. The Psychology of Cyberspace This free online book explores the psychological aspects of environments created by computers and online networks. Anyone who has taken an introductory psychology course knows how vast that terrain is. The psychological study of cyberspace is as broad as the field of psychology itself. It presents an evolving conceptual framework for understanding how people react to and behave within cyberspace. Cyberspace as Psychological Space With the advance of computers and online networks - especially the internet - a new dimension of human experience is rapidly opening up. This hypertext book explores the psychological aspects of environments created by computers and computer networks: what I call "the psychology of cyberspace" - or simply "cyberpsychology." Cognitive psychology, personality theory, social psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology - all are relevant. Revised and expanded over time, this book originally was created in January of 1996.
