A written burning permit must be obtained prior to any outside burning within the City of Saco. Stop in to any of Sanford's Fire Stations to learn more. Burning permits can be picked up from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Central Fire Station. This can be done on weekends, or any time they wish. All outdoor burning requires a permit. As of June 27, 2005, the State Department of Conservation requires burning permits for the Town of Manchester be obtained online at: www.maineforestservice.org. There is a list of allowed burning substances that are on the permit. Permits can be issued the day of the burn based on fire conditions reported daily at 9 am from the Maine Forest Service.

Schedule for issuing burning permits to private citizens: During daytime hours when the Class Day is a Class 1 and winds are appropriate for burning, OR: When the Maine Forest Service has discontinued the Class Day announcements for the season and the winds are appropriate for burning, OR; Weekends / Holidays from 9 am until Mid-Night. Fires will not be allowed on a class four or class five day. The person requesting the permit must verify the Class day by selecting the "Forest Fire Danger Report" link after 9. a.m. on the day they desire to burn. There is no charge for this permit.

This system is for brush piles, wood debris and agricultural burns only. Residents may obtain a permit through the Maine Forest Service website for a fee of $7.00 and are only good for the day of issue. Notice: Online burn permits are only valid on Class 1 or Class 2 days.

Please contact the local fire department or the Maine Forest Service Regional Headquarters for campfire permits. These permits can be issued based on the class day issued by the state of Maine Forestry Service.

The person requesting the permit must verify the class day after 9:00AM on the day they intend to burn. Reports are issued daily for all zones by 9:00am. Permits are considered valid for the date of issue until 9 am the following day. The fire danger classification is determined daily by the Maine Forest Service during the spring, summer, and fall (we are in Zone 1).
