But then if you took 2, two litres bottles and pressurised it to 120 psi again the rocket would go about 150 feet or so because the rocket has more air in it therefore creating more thrust. The long-distance bottle rocket shown here, though inexpensive and simple to make, is designed for long-distance flight. Figure 6. The rocket will only go 50 feet more because of the added mass. Water bottle rocket with low (left) and high (right) center of mass. Attach the cardboard to the bottle and then fill up the bottle with water. Soda Bottle Water Rocket: In a couple of hours (or less) you could make this water rocket! Materials Two 2-liter bottles One small plastic cone (athletic) Duct Tape Scissors String Manila Folder Large Plastic Trash Bag Masking Tape or Avery Paper reinforcement labels (you'll need 32/chute.) Create one bottle rocket that will fly straight and remain aloft for a maximum amount of time. On top of being just plain fun, a bottle rocket project can help you learn useful building skills and scientific concepts.

Water rockets use water and pressurized air to launch a soda bottle(s) 100's of feet into the air. After building and testing the rocket, you may want to experiment with changes to the number of fins, their angle, the shape of the nose or other features. Once testing is complete, students can answer the sixth question on the worksheet—to identify which tested rocket design was the best, which informs them on how to design their own water bottle rockets. Then, attach the cone to the bottom of an empty plastic bottle and cut out 4 cardboard triangles to make your rocket's fins. One of the best features about launching at angle is that water rockets can travel really impressive distances. You can stop this by making a two stage rocket.

Reaching 30 or 40 metres should be quite achievable, but distances beyond 100 m are possible with some careful design.

To build a bottle rocket, start by rolling a piece of paper into a cone and covering the outside of it with duct tape. This instructable will NOT cover the launcher.
