The two poems that make up most of the book were probably written during the 1930s, and were inspired by the legend of Sigurd and the fall of the Niflungs in Norse mythology. Völsunga Saga (Volsunga Saga or Volsungasaga) was the story of love and betrayal, adventure and tragedy, expanding over several generations, began with the son of Odin named Sigi.

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún is a book containing two narrative poems and related texts composed by J. R. R. Tolkien.It was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and HarperCollins on 5 May 2009.. However, she did not trust them. Grimhild discovered where Gudrun had settled, and she and her sons traveled there, offering Gudrun great wealth in compensation for her grievous loss. Gudrun made her way to Denmark where she sojourned seven seasons at the hall of King Half. The Volsunga Saga was about the heroism and tragedy of two families, the Volsungs and the Giukings (Niflungs or Nibelungs).
There she wove a great tapestry depicting the deeds of Sigurd.

An unknown author from Iceland wrote the Volsunga Saga in the thirteenth century.. The Völsunga saga (often referred to in English as the Volsunga Saga or Saga of the Völsungs) is a legendary saga, a late 13th century Icelandic prose rendition of the origin and decline of the Völsung clan (including the story of Sigurd and Brynhild and destruction of the Burgundians).
